The village of Brufut is located on the main costal road 30 minutes drive from the capital Banjul. It is home to approximately 1500 people who are mainly from the Mandinka tribe.
The present Alkalo (chief) of Brufut is Alhagie Kalifa Saano and it is his family who are custodians of the sacred site of Sannementereng on the cliff overlooking the beach. People come to Sannementereng to pray for solutions to all sorts of problems, unmarried women to get husbands, barren women to get children etc. It has been in existence for over 300 years.
Brufut was also the site of the only railway that has ever existed in the Gambia. It was constructed in the 1950’s when illeminite was mined here by the British – the railway and mines are now long gone although traces can still be spotted.
The owner of Lodge Mandinka works closely with the community in Brufut on various projects to improve the environment. |
